दैवासुरसम्पद्विभागयोग • Chapter 16
Identifying the qualities that lead to liberation (fearlessness, purity) versus those that lead to bondage (anger, pride).
Krishna said: Fearlessness, purity of heart, steadfastness in knowledge and yoga, charity, self-control, sacrifice, study of scripture, austerity, and straightforwardness —
Non-violence, truthfulness, freedom from anger, renunciation, peacefulness, not speaking ill of others, compassion for all beings, freedom from greed, gentleness, modesty, and steadiness —
O Arjuna, vigor, forgiveness, courage, cleanliness, freedom from malice, and absence of pride — these are the qualities of one born with a divine nature.
O Arjuna, hypocrisy, arrogance, pride, anger, harshness, and ignorance — these belong to one born with a demoniacal nature.
O Arjuna, the divine nature leads to liberation and the demoniacal to bondage. Do not worry — you are born with divine qualities.
O Arjuna, in this world there are two kinds of beings — the divine and the demoniacal. The divine has been described in detail; now hear from Me about the demoniacal.
People of demoniacal nature do not know what to do and what not to do. There is no purity, no right conduct, and no truth in them.
They say: 'This world has no truth, no foundation, no God — it came about only from the coming together of man and woman. What else could the reason be?'
Holding onto this view, these lost souls of small intelligence and cruel deeds arise as enemies of the world, bent on destroying it.
Filled with hypocrisy, pride, and arrogance, they cling to desires that can never be satisfied. Driven by delusion and false beliefs, they go about with impure intentions.
Caught in endless worries that last until death, believing sense-pleasure is the highest goal, they are convinced that this alone is the truth.
Bound by hundreds of chains of hope, slaves to lust and anger, they strive to hoard wealth through unjust means just to satisfy their desires.
Today I gained this, and I shall fulfill that desire too; I have this much wealth and will get even more in the future' —
That enemy was killed by me and I shall kill others too; I am the lord, the enjoyer, perfect, powerful, and happy' —
I am wealthy, born in a noble family — who equals me? I will perform sacrifice, give charity, enjoy myself' — deluded by such ignorance, they go on.
Bewildered by countless thoughts, entangled in the web of delusion, addicted to pleasure — they fall into a dark and filthy hell.
Self-important, stubborn, drunk on wealth and pride — they perform sacrifices in name only, as a show, ignoring all proper scriptural guidelines.
Consumed by ego, force, arrogance, lust, and anger — always criticizing others — these people hate Me, the Supreme Self dwelling in their own bodies and in others.
Such hateful, cruel, and degraded people — I repeatedly cast them into demoniacal wombs in this world.
O Arjuna, these deluded ones take birth in demoniacal forms life after life. Never reaching Me, they sink into an even lower state.
Lust, anger, and greed — these are the three gates of hell that destroy the soul. Therefore, one must give up all three.
O Arjuna, one who is freed from these three dark gates acts for their own good and thereby reaches the Supreme Goal.
One who sets aside the guidance of scripture and acts only on personal desire attains neither perfection, nor happiness, nor the Supreme Goal.
Therefore, let scripture be your guide in knowing what to do and what not to do. Understanding the proper method shown in scripture, you should perform your actions in this world.
