श्रीकृष्ण बोले — ज्ञानी लोग इस संसार को एक अविनाशी पीपल वृक्ष कहते हैं जिसकी जड़ें ऊपर और शाखाएं नीचे हैं; जिसके पत्ते वेद हैं — उसे जानने वाला वेदों का ज्ञाता है।

Krishna said: The wise describe this world as an eternal peepul tree, with its roots above and branches below, whose leaves are the Vedic hymns. One who knows this tree knows the Vedas.

इस वृक्ष की शाखाएं गुणों से बढ़ी हुई नीचे-ऊपर सब ओर फैली हैं; विषय इसके अंकुर हैं; और मनुष्य लोक में कर्मों से बंधी कुछ जड़ें नीचे फैली हैं।

Its branches spread upward and downward, nourished by the three qualities; the sense-objects are its buds; and below, in the world of men, stretch roots that bind beings through their actions.

इस संसार वृक्ष का असली रूप यहाँ दिखाई नहीं देता — न इसका आदि है, न अंत, न कोई ठोस आधार। इस गहरी जड़ों वाले अश्वत्थ वृक्ष को वैराग्य की तीखी तलवार से काटकर...

Its true form cannot be seen here — it has no beginning, no end, no fixed foundation. Cut down this deep-rooted peepul tree with the strong axe of non-attachment...

उस स्थान को ढूँढ़ना चाहिए जहाँ से वापस नहीं लौटा जाता। मैं उस आदि पुरुष की शरण में जाता हूँ, जिससे यह सनातन संसार और समस्त जीवों की प्रवृत्ति फली है।

Then seek that place from which, once reached, one never returns. Surrender to that Primal Being from whom this ancient creation and all its activity flows forth.

जिनका अहंकार और मोह समाप्त हो गया है, जिन्होंने आसक्ति के दोष को जीत लिया है, जो अध्यात्म में स्थिर हैं, जिनकी कामनाएं शांत हो गई हैं और जो सुख-दुःख के द्वंद्वों से मुक्त होे गए हैं — एसे ज्ञानी उस अविनाशी धाम को प्राप्त होते हैं।

Those who are free from pride and delusion, who have conquered the fault of attachment, who dwell ever in the Self, whose desires have ceased, who are freed from the pairs of opposites like pleasure and pain — such undeluded ones reach that eternal goal.

उसे न सूर्य प्रकाशित करता है, न चंद्रमा, न अग्नि। जहाँ जाने के बाद कोई लौटता नहीं — वह मेरा परम धाम है।

That place is not illumined by the sun, the moon, or fire. Once you go there, you never return — that is My supreme abode.

इस जीव जगत में मेरा ही सनातन अंश जीव बनकर स्थित है। वह प्रकृति में स्थित मन सहित पाँचों इंद्रियों को अपनी ओर खींचता है।

An eternal part of Me has become the individual soul in this world of living beings. It draws to itself the mind and five senses, which dwell in Nature.

जब यह जीव एक शरीर धारण करता है और जब छोड़ता है, तो इन इंद्रियों को साथ लेकर जाता है — जैसे वायु फूलों से सुगंध लेकर जाती है।

When the soul takes on a body and when it leaves, it carries these senses along — just as the wind carries fragrance from flower to flower.

यह जीव कान, आँख, स्पर्श, रसना और घ्राण — इन इंद्रियों तथा मन को आश्रय करके विषयों का अनुभव करता है।

Taking the ear, eye, touch, taste, and smell — and using the mind as well — this soul experiences the sense-objects.

शरीर छोड़ते, शरीर में रहते या विषयों को भोगते हुए इस गुणसहित आत्मा को मूढ़ लोग नहीं देख पाते; पर ज्ञानचक्षु वाले लोग इसे देखते हैं।

The deluded do not see this soul — departing, dwelling in the body, or experiencing objects along with the qualities. But those with the eye of knowledge do see it.

योगी लोग प्रयत्न करते हुए अपने हृदय में स्थित इस आत्मा को देखते हैं; किन्तु अशुद्ध अंत:करण वाले और अविवेकी लोग प्रयत्न करके भी इसे नहीं देख पाते।

Yogis who strive sincerely behold this Self within themselves. But those with impure minds and no discernment, even when they strive, cannot see it.

जो तेज सूर्य में समस्त संसार को प्रकाशित करता है, जो तेज चंद्रमा और अग्नि में है — उसे तुम मेरा ही तेज जानो।

The light that shines in the sun and lights the whole world, the light in the moon and in fire — know that light to be Mine.

मैं ही पृथ्वी में प्रवेश करके अपनी शक्ति से समस्त प्राणियों को धारण करता हूँ; और रसस्वरूप चंद्रमा बनकर समस्त वनस्पतियों का पोषण करता हूँ।

I enter the earth and sustain all beings with My energy. And becoming the moon, full of nectar, I nourish all plants and herbs.

मैं ही समस्त प्राणियों के शरीर में वैश्वानर अग्नि के रूप में स्थित हूँ; प्राण और अपान से युक्त होकर चारों प्रकार के अन्न को पचाता हूँ।

I dwell as the digestive fire in the bodies of all living beings. Joined with the incoming and outgoing breath, I digest all four kinds of food.

मैं ही सबके हृदय में विराजमान हूँ। स्मृति, ज्ञान और उनका अभाव — सब मुझसे ही हैं। समस्त वेदों द्वारा जानने योग्य मैं ही हूँ; वेदांत का रचयिता और वेदों का ज्ञाता भी मैं ही हूँ।

I am seated in the hearts of all. From Me come memory, knowledge, and their loss. I am the One to be known through all the Vedas; I am the author of the Vedanta and the knower of the Vedas.

इस संसार में दो पुरुष हैं — क्षर (नाशवान) और अक्षर (अनाशवान)। समस्त भूत क्षर हैं और कूटस्थ अक्षर कहलाता है।

In this world there are two kinds of beings — the perishable and the imperishable. All creatures are perishable; the unchanging, immovable Self is called imperishable.

परन्तु एक उत्तम पुरुष और है जिसे परमात्मा कहते हैं — जो तीनों लोकों में प्रवेश करके सबका पालन करने वाला अव्यय ईश्वर है।

But there is another — the Supreme Being, called the Highest Self — who pervades all three worlds and sustains them as the eternal, unchanging Lord.

क्योंकि मैं क्षर से परे हूँ और अक्षर से भी उत्तम हूँ, इसलिए लोक में और वेदों में भी मैं पुरुषोत्तम नाम से प्रसिद्ध हूँ।

Because I transcend the perishable and am even beyond the imperishable, I am known in the world and in the Vedas as the Supreme Person — Purushottama.

हे भारत! जो मनुष्य मोहरहित होकर मुझे पुरुषोत्तम जानता है, वह सर्वज्ञ होकर पूरे हृदय से मेरी भक्ति करता है।

O Arjuna, one who knows Me without confusion as the Supreme Person — knowing all, they worship Me with their whole heart.

हे निष्पाप भारत! इस प्रकार यह सबसे गुप्त शास्त्र मैंने तुम्हें सुनाया — इसे जानकर मनुष्य ज्ञानी हो जाता है और उसका समस्त कर्तव्य पूर्ण हो जाता है।

O sinless Arjuna, I have now taught you this most secret knowledge. Knowing this, a person becomes truly wise and their every duty is fulfilled.
