ज्ञानकर्मसंन्यासयोग • Chapter 4
The history of the Gita, the descent of Avatars, and how wisdom burns the karma of actions like a blazing fire.
Krishna said: I taught this imperishable Yoga first to Vivasvan (the Sun); Vivasvan taught it to Manu, and Manu taught it to Ikshvaku.
This Yoga, received through an unbroken chain of teachers, was known by the royal sages. But O Arjuna, over a long passage of time, this Yoga was lost in this world.
That same ancient Yoga I have today taught to you, because you are My devotee and My friend. This is the supreme secret.
Arjuna said: Your birth is recent and Vivasvan's birth was much earlier. How then am I to understand that you taught this Yoga in the beginning of creation?
Krishna said: O Arjuna! Both you and I have had many births. I know all of them, but you do not.
Although I am unborn, eternal and the Lord of all beings, I still appear to take birth by My own power (Maya), keeping My nature under My control.
O Arjuna! Whenever righteousness declines and unrighteousness rises, I manifest Myself.
For the protection of the good, for the destruction of the wicked, and for the re-establishment of righteousness, I am born in every age.
O Arjuna! My birth and actions are divine. One who truly knows this is not reborn after death but comes to Me.
Many people, freed from attachment, fear and anger, absorbed in Me and taking My refuge, purified by the fire of knowledge, have attained My nature.
In whatever way people approach Me, I reward them accordingly. O Arjuna! All people, in every way, follow My path.
Those who desire quick results of their actions in this world worship the gods, because in the human world, the fruits of action come quickly.
I created the four-fold order (of society) according to the distribution of qualities and duties. Though I am its creator, know Me as the non-doer and eternal.
Actions do not bind Me, because I have no desire for the fruits of action. One who truly knows Me this way is also not bound by actions.
The ancient seekers of liberation also performed action knowing this truth. Therefore, perform your duties just as the ancients did.
Even the wise are confused about what is action and what is inaction. So I will explain action to you — knowing which, you will be freed from the bondage of this world.
One must understand the nature of right action, the nature of wrong action, and the nature of inaction. The path of action is very deep and subtle.
One who sees inaction in action and action in inaction — he is truly wise among all people. He is a yogi who performs all actions.
One whose every action is free from desire and selfish purpose, whose actions have been burnt in the fire of knowledge — the wise call such a person truly learned.
One who has given up attachment to the fruits of action, who is always content and depends on nothing — even while engaged in action, does nothing at all (in a spiritual sense).
One who is without desire, whose mind and body are controlled, who has given up all possessiveness — such a person, doing only bodily actions, does not incur any sin.
One who is satisfied with whatever comes on its own, who is beyond opposites (pleasure-pain), free from jealousy, and equal in success and failure — such a person is not bound even while acting.
One who is free from attachment, who is liberated, whose mind is fixed in knowledge, who acts for the sake of God (sacrifice) — all of his actions dissolve completely.
The offering is Brahman, the oblation is Brahman, poured by Brahman into the fire of Brahman — one who sees Brahman in everything attains Brahman.
Some yogis perform sacrifice to the gods alone; while others offer the self as sacrifice into the fire of Brahman through knowledge.
Some offer the senses (like hearing) as sacrifice in the fire of self-restraint; others offer sense objects (like sound) as sacrifice in the fire of the senses.
Others offer all the functions of the senses and of the breath (prana) as sacrifice in the fire of self-restraint, lit by the light of knowledge.
Some offer wealth, austerity and yoga as sacrifice; others of strict vows offer study of scriptures and knowledge as sacrifice.
Others, devoted to breath-control, offer the outgoing breath into the incoming and the incoming into the outgoing — restraining the movement of both, they remain fully absorbed in pranayama.
Others who regulate their diet offer the breath (life force) into the breath itself. All these are knowers of sacrifice, whose sins have been destroyed through sacrifice.
O Arjuna! Those who partake of the nectar left from sacrifice attain the eternal Brahman. One who does not perform sacrifice cannot even enjoy this world — how then can he attain the next?
Many types of sacrifices are described in the Vedas. Know them all as born of action. Knowing this, you will be liberated.
O Arjuna! The sacrifice of knowledge is superior to the sacrifice of material things. All action, in its totality, culminates in knowledge — knowledge is the highest goal.
Obtain that knowledge by bowing humbly before a teacher, by asking sincere questions, and by serving him. The wise teachers who have seen the truth will instruct you in that knowledge.
Having obtained that knowledge, you will never fall into delusion again. O Arjuna! Through this knowledge you will see all beings within your own Self and then in Me.
O Arjuna! Even if you are the most sinful of all sinners, you will cross over all sins using the boat of knowledge.
Just as a blazing fire reduces fuel to ashes, O Arjuna, similarly the fire of knowledge burns all actions to ashes.
There is truly nothing in this world as purifying as knowledge. One who is perfected in yoga finds it within the Self in due course of time.
One who is full of faith, devoted to knowledge and has controlled his senses — attains knowledge. And having attained knowledge, he soon reaches supreme peace.
The ignorant, the faithless and the doubter are all ruined. The doubting person has neither this world nor the next, nor any happiness.
O Arjuna! One who has renounced actions through yoga, whose doubts have been cut asunder by knowledge, and who is ever steadfast in the Self — such a person is not bound by actions.
Therefore, O Arjuna! With the sword of knowledge, cut asunder this doubt born of ignorance dwelling in your heart. Take refuge in Yoga and arise!
