Kshetra Kshetrajna Vibhaga Yoga •
Arjuna said: O Keshava, I wish to know about Nature and the Spirit, the field and the knower of the field, and also knowledge and what is worth knowing.
Krishna said: O Arjuna, this body is called the field. And those who know it call the one who knows it the knower of the field.
O Arjuna, know Me as the knower of the field in all fields. Knowing both the field and its knower — that, in My view, is true knowledge.
Hear from Me briefly what the field is, what it is like, what its modifications are, where it comes from, and who the knower of the field is and what His power is.
Sages have described this in many ways, in various meters and chants — and also through the conclusive, well-reasoned words of the Brahma Sutras.
The five great elements, ego, intellect, the unmanifest Nature, the ten senses, the one mind, and the five objects of the senses —
Desire, hatred, pleasure, pain, the body as a whole, consciousness, and steadiness — this, in brief, is the field along with its modifications.
Absence of pride, no pretension, non-violence, patience, straightforwardness, service to the teacher, purity, steadiness, and self-control —
Detachment from sense objects, freedom from ego; seeing the suffering in birth, death, old age, and disease —
Non-attachment, not clinging to son, wife, home and the like; and constant evenness of mind whether pleasant or unpleasant things happen —
Unswerving devotion to Me through undivided yoga; love for solitary places; and no taste for the company of common crowds —
Steadiness in self-knowledge and seeing the Supreme as the goal of true understanding — all this is called knowledge. Whatever is opposite to this is ignorance.
I will now clearly describe what is worth knowing — knowing which, one attains immortality. It is the beginningless Supreme Brahman, which can be called neither being nor non-being.
It has hands and feet everywhere; eyes, heads, and mouths on all sides; ears on all sides — it exists in the world enveloping everything.
It appears to function through all the senses, yet it is without any sense organ. Unattached, yet sustaining all; free from the qualities, yet experiencing them.
It is outside and inside all beings, both moving and unmoving. Because it is subtle, it cannot be known directly. It is far away and yet very near.
Though undivided, it appears as if divided among all beings. It is the sustainer of all, the destroyer, and the creator — this is what is worth knowing.
It is the light of all lights, said to be beyond darkness. It is knowledge, the knowable, and the goal of knowledge — and it dwells in the hearts of all.
Thus the field, knowledge, and what is worth knowing have been described in brief. My devotee, knowing this truly, enters into My being.
Know both Nature and the Spirit to be beginningless. And know that all transformations and qualities arise from Nature alone.
In producing effects and causes, Nature is said to be the reason. In experiencing pleasure and pain, the individual soul is said to be the reason.
The soul, dwelling in Nature, experiences the qualities born of Nature. Its attachment to these qualities is the cause of its birth in good and bad wombs.
The supreme Spirit in this body is also called the witness, the permitter, the sustainer, the experiencer, the great Lord, and the Supreme Self.
One who truly knows the Spirit and Nature together with its qualities — no matter in what condition they live — will not be born again.
Some perceive the Self within the self through meditation; others through the path of knowledge; and still others through the path of action — there are many ways.
Others who do not know these paths, but simply worship having heard from others — they too cross beyond death, treating what they have heard as their supreme refuge.
O best of the Bharatas, know that whatever comes into existence — whether moving or unmoving — is born of the union between the field and its knower.
One who sees the Supreme Lord dwelling equally in all perishable beings, imperishable within the perishable — that one truly sees.
Because one who sees the same Lord equally present everywhere does not harm the Self through the self — and thereby reaches the highest goal.
One who sees that all actions are performed by Nature alone, and that the Self does nothing — that one truly sees.
When one sees the separate existence of all beings resting in the One, and spreading out from that One alone — then one attains Brahman.
O Arjuna, this Supreme Self is beginningless and without qualities — it is imperishable. Though dwelling in the body, it neither acts nor is touched by anything.
Just as all-pervading space is not stained because of its subtlety, similarly the Self, present everywhere in the body, is not tainted.
O Arjuna, just as the one sun illumines this entire world, so the one knower of the field illumines the entire field.
Those who, with the eye of knowledge, perceive this difference between the field and its knower — and the liberation from the bondage of Nature — they go to the Supreme.
