Kashi Vishwanath: Journey to the Center of Eternal Light

Kashi (Varanasi), located on the banks of the sacred River Ganga, is believed to be the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world. Mark Twain once wrote, 'Benares is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend, and looks twice as old as all of them put together.' At the spiritual heart of Kashi lies the Vishwanath Temple, one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas, representing Shiva as the supreme pillar of cosmic light.

"काशी विश्वनाथ गंगे, हर हर महादेव।" (Just remembering the name of Kashi Vishwanath and Holy Ganga washes away lifetimes of karmas.)

The temple has faced multiple destructions throughout history, yet it has risen back every time, reflecting the indestructible nature of Sanatan Dharma. The reconstruction by Queen Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore in 1780 gave the temple its modern shape, including its famous gold-plated shikhara. Recently, the creation of the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor has transformed the temple complex, opening up a direct, spacious pathway from the sacred Ganga river ghats directly to the temple sanctum.

From a yogic perspective, Kashi is not just a geographical place; it represents the Ajna Chakra (the third eye center) within the human body. The confluence of the Varuna and Asi rivers with the Ganga represents the Ida, Pingala, and Sushumna nadis meeting. Visiting Kashi with devotion helps clear mental blocks and facilitates a deep transition in one's spiritual consciousness.
