Chapter 8
The science of focus at the moment of death, the nature of the cosmos, and the imperishable supreme destination.
Arjuna said: O Supreme Person! What is Brahman? What is the Self? What is action? What is Adhibhuta? And what is Adhidaiva?
O Krishna! Who is Adhiyajna here in this body, and how? And how can people with a steady mind know You at the time of death?
Krishna said: The highest and indestructible reality is Brahman. One’s own true nature is called the Self. The force that gives rise to the existence of all beings is called action.
O Arjuna! Perishable things are Adhibhuta. The divine soul is Adhidaiva. And I myself am the Adhiyajna in this body.
Whoever leaves the body at the time of death while remembering only Me — reaches My state. There is no doubt about this.
O Arjuna! Whatever a person is thinking about at the time of death — they reach that very thing, because they have always been absorbed in it.
So remember Me at all times and also fight. Fix your mind and intellect on Me — and without any doubt, you will come to Me alone.
O Arjuna! With the mind made steady through the practice of Yoga — not wandering anywhere else — one who constantly meditates on the Supreme Divine Being reaches Him.
The one who meditates on the one who knows everything, who is ancient, who rules all, who is smaller than the smallest, who holds everyone up, who is beyond thought, who is bright like the sun, and who is beyond all darkness —
At the time of death, with a steady mind and full devotion, using the power of Yoga — fixing the life-breath between the eyebrows — that person reaches the Supreme Divine Being.
That which those who know the Vedas call the Imperishable; that which people who are free from desire enter; that which people follow brahmacharya to reach — I will tell you that goal briefly.
Closing all the gates of the senses, holding the mind in the heart, and placing the life-breath in the head — while staying firm in Yoga —
Chanting the one syllable Om and remembering Me while leaving the body — that person reaches the highest goal.
O Arjuna! For the Yogi who is always connected to Me — who remembers Me every day without thinking of anything else — I am very easy to reach.
After reaching Me, these great souls do not take birth again — in this world that is full of pain and keeps changing. They have reached the highest perfection.
O Arjuna! All the worlds up to Brahma’s world come back again. But the one who reaches Me does not take birth again.
Those who know that Brahma’s one day lasts a thousand ages, and his one night also lasts a thousand ages — they truly understand day and night.
When Brahma’s day begins, all beings appear from the Unmanifest. When his night comes, they all dissolve back into that same Unmanifest.
O Arjuna! This same group of beings is born again and again and dissolves again. Whether they want to or not, they appear at the start of the day and dissolve at the start of the night.
But beyond that Unmanifest there is another eternal and unmanifest reality — which does not get destroyed even when all beings are destroyed.
That is called the Unmanifest and the Imperishable — and that is the highest goal. Those who reach it do not come back. That is My highest home.
O Arjuna! That Supreme Being — in whom all living beings exist and by whom all this world is filled — can only be reached through pure and undivided devotion.
O best of Bharatas! I will now tell you the times — the paths — by which Yogis who leave the body either come back or do not come back.
Those who know Brahman and leave through the path of fire, light, daytime, the bright fortnight, and the six months of the northern solstice — they reach Brahman.
The Yogi who leaves through the path of smoke, night, the dark fortnight, and the six months of the southern solstice — reaches the light of the moon and comes back.
These two paths — the bright and the dark — are considered eternal in this world. By one, you don’t come back. By the other, you do.
O Arjuna! The Yogi who knows both these paths is never confused. So always stay connected to Yoga.
Knowing all this, the Yogi goes beyond the merit earned from studying the Vedas, performing rituals, practising austerities, and giving charity — and reaches the Supreme, eternal home.
