अर्जुन बोले — आपने मुझ पर अनुग्रह करके जो परम गोपनीय अध्यात्म का उपदेश दिया, उससे मेरा मोह दूर हो गया है।

Arjuna said: The profound teaching on the Self that you gave me out of grace has removed my delusion completely.

हे कमलनयन! आपसे मैंने जीवों की उत्पत्ति और प्रलय विस्तार से सुना है, और आपकी अनंत महिमा भी सुनी है।

O lotus-eyed Lord, I have heard in great detail from you about the origin and dissolution of all beings, and your inexhaustible greatness.

हे परमेश्वर! आप अपने को जैसा कहते हैं, वह ठीक वैसा ही है। लेकिन हे पुरुषोत्तम! मैं आपके ईश्वरीय रूप को अपनी आँखों से प्रत्यक्ष देखना चाहता हूँ।

O Supreme Lord, you are exactly as you describe yourself. Yet I wish to see your divine form with my own eyes, O Purushottama.

हे प्रभो! यदि आप समझते हैं कि यह मेरे लिए संभव है, तो हे योगेश्वर! अपने अव्यय रूप का दर्शन कराइए।

O Lord, if you think it is possible for me to see it, then please reveal your imperishable form to me, O Master of Yoga.

श्रीकृष्ण बोले — हे पार्थ! मेरे सैकड़ों और हजारों तरह के, अनेक रंग और आकार के दिव्य रूपों को देखो।

Krishna said: O Arjuna, behold My divine forms by the hundreds and thousands, of many kinds, colors, and shapes.

हे भारत! मुझमें आदित्यों, वसुओं, रुद्रों, अश्विनीकुमारों और मरुतों को देखो — और बहुत से ऐसे अद्भुत दृश्य देखो जो पहले कभी नहीं देखे।

O Arjuna, see within Me the Adityas, Vasus, Rudras, the Ashvini twins, and the Maruts — and many more wonders never seen before.

हे गुडाकेश! आज मेरे इस शरीर में ही चराचर सहित सम्पूर्ण जगत् को एक जगह देखो — और जो भी देखना चाहते हो, वह भी देखो।

O Arjuna, see the entire universe — moving and unmoving — gathered in one place within My body, and whatever else you wish to see.

लेकिन तुम अपनी इन साधारण आँखों से मुझे नहीं देख सकते। इसलिए मैं तुम्हें दिव्य आँखें देता हूँ — इनसे मेरी ईश्वरीय शक्ति देखो।

But you cannot see Me with these ordinary eyes. So I give you divine sight — behold My lordly power!

संजय बोले — हे राजन्! महायोगेश्वर श्रीकृष्ण ने इतना कहकर अर्जुन को अपना परम ऐश्वर्यमय विश्वरूप दिखाया।

Sanjaya said: O King, having said this, the great Lord of Yoga, Krishna, revealed His supreme cosmic form to Arjuna.

अनेक मुख और आँखें, अनेक अद्भुत दृश्य, अनेक दिव्य आभूषण और अनेक दिव्य शस्त्र उठाए हुए —

With countless mouths and eyes, countless wondrous visions, countless divine ornaments and divine weapons raised —

दिव्य माला और वस्त्र पहने, दिव्य सुगंध लगाए, सब प्रकार के आश्चर्यों से युक्त, अनंत और सब ओर मुख वाले परम देव को अर्जुन ने देखा।

Wearing divine garlands and robes, anointed with divine fragrances — a Being of infinite wonder, resplendent, endless, with faces on all sides.

आकाश में यदि एक साथ हजार सूर्य उग जाएं, तो उनका जो प्रकाश हो — वह उस महात्मा (विश्वरूप) के प्रकाश के समान होगा।

If a thousand suns were to blaze in the sky all at once, that blazing light might perhaps compare to the radiance of that great Being.

उस समय अर्जुन ने देवों के देव श्रीकृष्ण के शरीर में अनेक प्रकार से विभक्त सम्पूर्ण जगत् को एक स्थान पर देखा।

There Arjuna saw the entire universe — divided into many parts — resting in one place within the body of Krishna, the God of gods.

उसके बाद आश्चर्यचकित और रोमांचित धनंजय अर्जुन ने उस विश्वरूप देव को प्रणाम करके हाथ जोड़कर कहा।

Then, filled with wonder, his hair standing on end, Arjuna bowed his head to the Lord and spoke with folded hands.

अर्जुन बोले — हे देव! मैं आपके शरीर में सभी देवताओं को, अनेक प्राणियों के समूहों को, कमल पर विराजमान ब्रह्माजी को, सभी ऋषियों और दिव्य नागों को देख रहा हूँ।

Arjuna said: O God, I see all the gods in your body, and hosts of all kinds of beings — Brahma seated on the lotus, all the sages, and the divine serpents.

हे विश्वेश्वर! हे विश्वरूप! मैं आपको अनेक बाहुओं, उदरों, मुखों और आँखों से युक्त, सब ओर से अनंत रूपों में देखता हूँ — न आपका अंत दिखता है, न मध्य, न आदि।

O Lord of the Universe! I see you with countless arms, bellies, mouths, and eyes, extending in all directions with infinite forms. I see no beginning, middle, or end to you.

मैं आपको मुकुटधारी, गदाधारी और चक्रधारी, सब ओर से प्रकाशमान तेज के पुंज के रूप में देखता हूँ — जलती अग्नि और सूर्य के समान देदीप्यमान, देखने में कठिन और अप्रमेय।

I see you with crown, mace, and discus — blazing on all sides as a mass of light, hard to look upon, radiant like a blazing fire and sun, immeasurable.

आप जानने योग्य परम अक्षर हैं, इस जगत् के परम आश्रय हैं। आप ही शाश्वत धर्म के रक्षक हैं और सनातन पुरुष हैं — ऐसा मेरा विश्वास है।

You are the supreme Imperishable, the highest truth worth knowing. You are the ultimate refuge of this universe, the eternal guardian of dharma, the primeval Person — so I believe.

मैं आपको आदि, अंत और मध्य से रहित, अनंत शक्तिशाली, अनंत भुजाओं वाले, चंद्र-सूर्य रूपी आँखों वाले, प्रज्वलित अग्नि रूपी मुख से सम्पूर्ण जगत् को तपाते हुए देखता हूँ।

I see you without beginning, middle, or end — of infinite power, of endless arms, with the sun and moon as your eyes, your mouth a blazing fire, warming this entire universe with your radiance.

हे महात्मन्! स्वर्ग और पृथ्वी के बीच का सम्पूर्ण आकाश और सब दिशाएं अकेले आपसे ही व्याप्त हैं। आपके इस अद्भुत और उग्र रूप को देखकर तीनों लोक भय से कांप रहे हैं।

O great Being, this entire space between heaven and earth, and all directions, is filled by you alone. Seeing this wondrous and terrible form of yours, all three worlds tremble with fear.

ये सभी देवताओं के समूह आपमें प्रवेश कर रहे हैं, कई डरकर हाथ जोड़े स्तुति कर रहे हैं। महर्षि और सिद्धगण 'स्वस्ति हो' कहते हुए उत्तम स्तोत्रों से आपकी प्रशंसा कर रहे हैं।

All these hosts of gods are entering you. Some, filled with fear, praise you with joined palms. The great sages and perfected ones cry 'may all be well!' and glorify you with hymns.

रुद्रगण, आदित्य, वसु, साध्यगण, विश्वेदेव, दोनों अश्विनीकुमार, मरुद्गण, उष्मपा, गंधर्व, यक्ष, असुर और सिद्धगण — ये सब आश्चर्यचकित होकर आपको देख रहे हैं।

The Rudras, Adityas, Vasus, Sadhyas, Vishvedevas, the two Ashvins, the Maruts, the ancestors, the Gandharvas, Yakshas, demons, and perfected beings — all gaze at you in amazement.

हे महाबाहो! आपके बहुत मुखों, आँखों, भुजाओं, जंघाओं, पैरों, उदरों और विकराल दाढ़ों वाले इस विशाल रूप को देखकर सब लोग व्यथित हो रहे हैं — और उसी तरह मैं भी।

O mighty-armed! Seeing your immense form with its many mouths and eyes, many arms, thighs, and feet, many stomachs, and fearsome teeth — all the worlds are terrified, and so am I.

हे विष्णो! आकाश को छूते हुए, प्रकाशमान, अनेक रंगों वाले, खुले मुख और बड़ी-बड़ी चमकीली आँखों वाले आपको देखकर मेरा मन भय से व्याकुल है, मुझे न धैर्य मिल रहा है न शांति।

O Vishnu! Seeing you touching the sky, blazing, many-colored, with gaping mouths and enormous shining eyes — my heart is trembling with fear; I find neither courage nor peace.

आपके विकराल दाढ़ों वाले और प्रलयाग्नि जैसे प्रज्वलित मुखों को देखकर मैं न दिशाएं जान पा रहा हूँ, न शांति पा रहा हूँ। हे देवेश! हे जगन्निवास! कृपया प्रसन्न होइए।

Seeing your mouths with terrifying teeth, blazing like the fires of dissolution — I cannot find my bearings or feel at peace. O Lord of the gods, O Abode of the universe, please show mercy.

ये सभी धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्र, राजाओं के समूह सहित, भीष्म, द्रोण, कर्ण और हमारे पक्ष के भी प्रमुख योद्धा —

All the sons of Dhritarashtra, along with their host of kings — Bhishma, Drona, Karna, and the leading warriors on our side too —

तीव्र वेग से आपके विकराल दाढ़ों वाले भयानक मुखों में प्रवेश कर रहे हैं। कई तो चूर्णित सिरों सहित आपके दांतों के बीच फंसे दिख रहे हैं।

Are rushing headlong into your terrifying mouths with their fearsome teeth. Some are found stuck between your teeth, their heads crushed.

जैसे नदियों की अनेक धाराएं वेग से समुद्र की ओर दौड़ती हैं, वैसे ही ये मानव लोक के वीर योद्धा आपके प्रज्वलित मुखों में प्रवेश कर रहे हैं।

Just as many rivers flow swiftly into the ocean, these heroes of the mortal world are pouring into your blazing mouths.

जैसे पतंगे अपने नाश के लिए तेज गति से जलती अग्नि में घुसते हैं, वैसे ही ये सभी अपने नाश के लिए तेज गति से आपके मुखों में प्रवेश कर रहे हैं।

Just as moths rush swiftly into a blazing fire to their own destruction, so too are all these beings rushing into your mouths toward their own destruction.

हे विष्णो! आप प्रज्वलित मुखों से इन सब लोकों को निगलते हुए चाट रहे हैं। आपका उग्र तेज सम्पूर्ण जगत् को भरकर जला रहा है।

O Vishnu! You are licking up and swallowing all the worlds on every side with your flaming mouths. Your fierce radiance fills the entire universe and scorches it.

मुझे बताइए — उग्र रूप वाले आप कौन हैं? हे देवों में श्रेष्ठ! आपको नमस्कार है, प्रसन्न होइए। मैं आदि स्वरूप आपको जानना चाहता हूँ, क्योंकि आपकी प्रवृत्ति को मैं समझ नहीं पा रहा।

Tell me who you are, so fierce in form. O greatest of gods, be gracious. I wish to know you, the Primal Being — I cannot understand your purpose here.

श्रीकृष्ण बोले — मैं लोकों का नाश करने वाला प्रचंड काल हूँ। अभी मैं इन लोकों का संहार करने में लगा हूँ। तुम्हारे बिना भी सामने की सेना के ये सब योद्धा नहीं बचेंगे।

Krishna said: I am Time — the destroyer of worlds, grown mighty, now engaged in consuming all these worlds. Even without you, all the warriors arrayed against you shall not survive.

इसलिए उठो और यश पाओ! शत्रुओं को जीतकर समृद्ध राज्य भोगो। ये सब पहले से ही मेरे द्वारा मारे जा चुके हैं। हे सव्यसाचिन! तुम बस निमित्त मात्र बनो।

So rise up and win glory! Conquer your enemies and enjoy a prosperous kingdom. These warriors have already been slain by Me. Be just the instrument, O Arjuna.

द्रोण, भीष्म, जयद्रथ, कर्ण और बाकी वीर योद्धाओं को मारो — ये सब मेरे द्वारा पहले ही मारे जा चुके हैं। डरो मत, लड़ो — तुम युद्ध में शत्रुओं को जीतोगे।

Drona, Bhishma, Jayadratha, Karna, and all the other brave warriors — they are already slain by Me. Kill them without fear. Fight — you will conquer your enemies in battle.

संजय बोले — केशव के ये वचन सुनकर मुकुटधारी अर्जुन हाथ जोड़े हुए, कांपते हुए, प्रणाम करके डरे हुए मन से गद्गद् स्वर में बोला।

Sanjaya said: Hearing those words of Krishna, Arjuna with joined palms, trembling, bowed down and — overwhelmed with fear — spoke in a choked voice.

अर्जुन बोले — हे हृषीकेश! यह उचित ही है कि आपकी महिमा से जगत् बहुत प्रसन्न होता है और अनुराग में भर जाता है। भयभीत राक्षस सब दिशाओं में भाग रहे हैं और सिद्धगणों के समूह आपको नमस्कार कर रहे हैं।

Arjuna said: O Krishna, it is right that the world delights and is filled with love at your praise. Demons flee in terror in all directions, while the hosts of perfected ones bow to you.

हे महात्मन्! जो ब्रह्मा के भी आदि कर्ता और सबसे श्रेष्ठ हैं, उन्हें ये नमस्कार क्यों न करें? हे अनंत! हे देवेश! हे जगन्निवास! जो सत्, असत् और उनसे परे अक्षरतत्त्व है — वह आप ही हैं।

O great Soul! Why would they not bow to you — you who are greater than Brahma himself, the original creator? O Infinite One! O Lord of gods! O Abode of the universe! You are the Imperishable, Being, non-being, and that which is beyond both.

आप आदिदेव और सनातन पुरुष हैं, इस जगत् के परम आश्रय हैं। आप ज्ञाता भी हैं और जानने योग्य भी, और परम धाम भी। हे अनंत रूप! आपसे ही यह सम्पूर्ण जगत् व्याप्त है।

You are the primal God, the ancient Person, the supreme refuge of this universe. You are the knower, the knowable, and the supreme abode. O Being of infinite forms — the universe is pervaded by you.

आप वायु, यम, अग्नि, वरुण, चंद्रमा, प्रजापति और प्रपितामह भी हैं। आपको हजार बार नमस्कार — बार-बार नमस्कार!

You are Vayu, Yama, Agni, Varuna, the moon, the Creator, and the great-grandfather. Salutations to you a thousand times — again and again, salutations!

आपके सामने से, पीछे से और सब ओर से नमस्कार! हे सर्वात्मन्! आप अनंत शक्ति और असीम पराक्रम वाले हैं, आप सबको व्याप्त किए हुए हैं — इसलिए आप ही सब कुछ हैं।

Salutations from the front, from behind, salutations on every side, O All! You are of infinite power and boundless might. You pervade all — and so you are everything.

आपकी इस महिमा को न जानते हुए, आपको मित्र समझकर मैंने प्रमाद से या प्रेमवश 'हे कृष्ण! हे यादव! हे सखे!' ऐसा जो कुछ बेतकल्लुफी से कह दिया —

Whatever I may have said carelessly or out of affection — calling you 'O Krishna! O Yadava! O Friend!' — not knowing your greatness —

और हे अच्युत! खेलते, सोते, बैठते या भोजन करते समय अकेले में या दूसरों के सामने भी आपका जो अपमान हुआ हो — उन सब के लिए अप्रमेय स्वरूप आपसे मैं क्षमा मांगता हूँ।

And if I ever showed you disrespect in play, while resting, sitting, or eating — alone or in front of others — O Achyuta, I beg your forgiveness, O immeasurable One.

आप इस चराचर जगत् के पिता, पूजनीय और सर्वश्रेष्ठ गुरु हैं। हे अप्रतिम प्रभाव वाले भगवन्! तीनों लोकों में आपके समान भी कोई नहीं, फिर आपसे बढ़कर कैसे होगा?

You are the Father of this world — moving and unmoving. You are its most worthy teacher, its greatest guru. No one is equal to you in all three worlds — how could anyone be superior, O Being of unmatched power?

इसलिए हे भगवन्! मैं साष्टांग प्रणाम करके स्तुति के योग्य आप ईश्वर से प्रसन्न होने की प्रार्थना करता हूँ। जैसे पिता पुत्र के, मित्र मित्र के और प्रिय प्रिया के अपराध क्षमा करता है — वैसे ही आप भी मेरे अपराध क्षमा कीजिए।

Therefore, bowing down and prostrating myself before you, I seek your grace, O adorable Lord. As a father forgives a son, a friend forgives a friend, a lover forgives a beloved — so please forgive me, O God.

इस अदृष्टपूर्व रूप को देखकर मैं प्रसन्न भी हो रहा हूँ और मेरा मन भय से व्याकुल भी है। इसलिए हे देव! मुझे वही पहला रूप दिखाइए। हे देवेश! हे जगन्निवास! प्रसन्न होइए।

I am thrilled to have seen this form never seen before, yet my heart is filled with fear. O God, please show me only that familiar form of yours. O Lord of the gods, O Abode of the universe, have mercy.

मैं आपको मुकुट, गदा और चक्र धारण किए उसी रूप में देखना चाहता हूँ। हे विश्वमूर्ते! हे सहस्रबाहो! कृपया उसी चतुर्भुज रूप में आ जाइए।

I want to see you as before — with crown, mace, and discus in hand. O Being of cosmic form, O thousand-armed One — please take back that four-armed form.

श्रीकृष्ण बोले — हे अर्जुन! तुम पर प्रसन्न होकर मैंने अपनी योगशक्ति से यह परम तेजोमय, अनंत और आदि विश्वरूप तुम्हें दिखाया — जिसे तुमसे पहले किसी ने नहीं देखा था।

Krishna said: O Arjuna, out of My grace for you, I showed you this supreme, radiant, infinite, primeval Cosmic Form by My own yogic power — which no one but you has ever seen before.

हे कुरुप्रवीर! तुम्हारे अतिरिक्त इस मनुष्यलोक में कोई और इस रूप को — न वेदाध्ययन से, न यज्ञ से, न दान से, न कर्मकांड से और न कठोर तप से — देख सकता है।

O great hero of the Kurus, no one else in this human world can see Me in this form — not through Vedic study, not through sacrifice, not through gifts, not through rituals, not through fierce austerities.

मेरा यह रूप देखकर तुम्हें डर और घबराहट न हो। निर्भय और प्रसन्नचित्त होकर अब मेरे उसी पहले के रूप को देखो।

Do not be afraid or confused by this terrible form of Mine. With your fear gone and heart gladdened, now behold again My familiar form.

संजय बोले — भगवान् वासुदेव ने अर्जुन से इस प्रकार कहकर पुनः अपना (पहले वाला) रूप दिखाया। और सौम्य रूपधारी महात्मा श्रीकृष्ण ने भयभीत अर्जुन को सांत्वना दी।

Sanjaya said: Having thus spoken to Arjuna, Krishna showed His own form once again, and that great Soul, taking on His gentle form, consoled the terrified Arjuna.

अर्जुन बोले — हे जनार्दन! आपका यह सौम्य मानवीय रूप देखकर अब मेरा मन शांत हो गया है और मैं अपने स्वभाव को वापस पा गया हूँ।

Arjuna said: O Krishna, seeing this gentle human form of yours, my mind is now at rest and I have returned to my normal self.

श्रीकृष्ण बोले — मेरा यह रूप देख पाना बहुत दुर्लभ है जो तुमने देखा है। देवतागण भी सदा इस रूप के दर्शन की इच्छा रखते हैं।

Krishna said: This form of Mine that you have seen is very rare to behold. Even the gods always yearn to see it.

न वेदों से, न तप से, न दान से और न यज्ञ से मैं उस रूप में देखा जा सकता हूँ, जैसा तुमने मुझे देखा है।

Not by the Vedas, not by austerity, not by charity, not by sacrifice can I be seen in this form as you have seen Me.

लेकिन हे परंतप अर्जुन! अनन्य भक्ति से मुझे इस रूप में जाना जा सकता है, प्रत्यक्ष देखा जा सकता है और तत्त्वतः प्रवेश भी किया जा सकता है।

But by single-pointed devotion can I be truly known, seen, and even entered into, O Arjuna.

हे पाण्डव! जो मेरे लिए ही कार्य करता है, मुझे ही परम लक्ष्य मानता है, मेरा भक्त है, आसक्ति से मुक्त है और किसी भी प्राणी से वैर नहीं रखता — वह मुझे प्राप्त होता है।

One who acts for My sake, who holds Me as the supreme goal, who is devoted to Me, free from attachment, without enmity toward any being — that person comes to Me, O Arjuna.
